Ryne Returns to Peoria

ryne-sandberg-peoria.jpgSo Mr. Ryne Sandberg is back in Peoria Chiefs pinstripes this season. The former Chicago Cub hall of famer led the Chiefs to a 71-68 mark in his first year managing the team. I don’t think they expected him back – but he is.

“This is a very unexpected turn of events for us,” said Chiefs President Rocky Vonachen. “Our staff has been hard at work with their best off-season to date planning the 2008 promotional and ticket campaigns and having Ryne return is an added boost of excitement in the office and throughout the community. We look forward to providing Central Illinois with another outstanding season of baseball and entertainment to build off the record breaking success of 2007.”

Having Ryne in Peoria adds a lot of excitement to Chiefs games. I know the few games I went to – everyone wanted to see Ryne. Glad to hear he is back in Peoria for another year at least. Anyone else?

  1. Cubs 1st round draft pick Josh Vitters is expected to get assigned to the Chiefs for next season.

Former Cub Carmelo Martinez will be the Chiefs hitting coach.

  2. I went to all but a few Chiefs games last year. Every game Ryne stands outside his dugout and signs autographs for 10-20min (or until there is no more line). Peoria is lucky to have him, he’ll be moving up through the baseball ranks soon enough.
